Michelle Carter ordered to begin serving jail sentence in texting suicide case

Taunton, Mass. — A young woman who urged her boyfriend through text messages to kill himself has been ordered to jail to begin serving her 15-month sentence. Michelle Carter was taken into custody at the end of a brief hearing before the Taunton Trial Court Monday afternoon.
Monday's hearing came after Massachusetts' Supreme Judicial Court upheld Carter's conviction last week, and then denied her request to keep her out of jail while her lawyers appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Carter was convicted in 2017 of involuntary manslaughter for her role in the death of Conrad Roy III.
The judge who convicted Carter and the appeals court found she caused Roy's death when she instructed him to get back in his truck filling with toxic gas. "48 Hours" covered the case in the episode, "Death by Text."
The trial judge allowed Carter to remain free while she appealed in state court.
Carter, 22, appeared Monday before the same trial judge, who ruled she would start her 15-month sentence. She showed no emotion as she was taken into custody.
Carter's lawyers say she isn't responsible for Roy's suicide.
