ANKARA, Turkey — Shots were fired from a passing vehicle at the U.S. Embassy here early Monday, according to reports. The embassy says no one was wounded.
The Turkish news agency IHA said police were searching for the suspects.
An embassy spokesperson confirms only that a "security incident" occurred, adding, "We have no reports of any injuries and we are investigating the details. We thank the Turkish National Police for their rapid response."
IHA cites law enforcement sources as saying a security guard cabin was targeted from a white car. Witnesses told IHA they heard 4 or 5 gunshots around the building's Gate 6. CNN Turk reports a window in the booth was hit.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Turkey over the trial of an American pastor in Turkey and resulting U.S. sanctions contributing to a spiraling Turkish currency.
